National Health Education Standards Overview

The National Health Education Standards were published in 1995 and were created for the reason of the promotion as well as the overall support of behaviors that enhance the overall health and well being of individuals in grades ranging from Pre-K to 12th grade. The National Health Education Standars aim to acheive both:

  • Giving the framwork to teachers and policy makers along with descision makers to enable them to be able to use as well as design different learning methods, grouping together instructional resources as well as montitoring the acheivement progression in students.
  • To provide students and communities along with families with solid expectations when it comes to education on health.

The 8 National Health Education Standards

There are 8 mian standards that are taught which were all devel0ped a joint effort between the American Cancer Society along with the Joint Committe of National Health Education Standards as a way to educate all different people about leading a healthy lifestyle. Being that there is too much informatin to list for what each standards encompasses on each grade, below is an indepth description of what each of the National Health Education Standards focus upon.

Standard 1 – Acquiring the concepts, those based off models and theories, of general basic health which enables teachers to be able to promote behaviors that will enhance good health in the youth age group. This section also provides information on risk reduction.

Standard 2 – Focusing on how health is affected both positively and negatively in our society as well as understanding these influences which all include beliefs, personal values as well as what people percieve to be nornal.

Standard 3 – Health product promotion information detailing early detection, preventing and treating problems in peoples health. Also, how one can find good resources as well as avoid false resources. Methods of teaching will include; comparison, evaluating and analysis which will all motivate students to reach optimal health.

Standard 4 – Focuses on both verbal and non verbal communication skills, all of which play a vital part in providing health knowledge to communities and individuals as well as forming and maintaing strong relationships, which in turn will reduce or completely stop confrontation and conflict.

Standard 5 – This section focuses on decision making skills, which is vital to the identification, implematation as well as sustainability when it comes to behaviors that enhance better health. The steps making health descisions are included as well as how knowledge will help indiviuals help eachother to better their health.

Standard 6 – Goal setting and it’s importance in adopting and maintaining good health through the right behaviors. Detialing goal setting methods that allow for sucess in both the short term as well as the long term

Standard 7 – Detailing how to promote accpeting individual responsibility for a persons own health as well as practicing behaviors that will maintain this good health as well as preventing or reducing injuries and diseases.

Standard 8 – Teachings students skills that will allow them to form messages on health enhancing activities and methods which will provide encouragement to the audience that they are targeting.
